50/50 Chance

From Shannon

Each time Don leaves on a work trip there is a 50/50 chance of a mechanical, computer, health or weather related disaster; that pushes me out of my comfort zone.

As you may have seen in his writings, Don is traveling in Tucson for a couple weeks and this time I was positive the disaster would be a hurricane. We prepared knowing he would be gone when Helene was predicted to hit land. Thankfully Cocoa Beach was fortunate to only have winds and thunderstorms. Nothing too extreme.

However a few days after Don left town the Honda refused to start. Getting a jump-start from one of our neighbors, I thought for sure I had left a light on in the car and that would be the end of it. Annoying but not something I hadn’t dealt with before.

So I was quite surprised when after filling it with gas it once again refused to start. It wouldn’t even turn over, just dead. The clerk at the station kindly offered to jump-start the car and I mentally added a trip to get the battery replaced to my list of errands. Once again a hassle but nothing I couldn’t handle.

Henry found the detour from our normal routine exciting

This however did not work and the car absolutely refused to start. After a conversation with Don and much sweating I was overwhelmed and knew I needed real help. After a short google search I decided to call Cocoa Beach Auto Repair and Towing. Their online reviews were excellent and they were a one stop shop.

The owner and the manager showed up within 20 minutes, checked the battery and determined it was most likely the starter. They quickly loaded the old Honda Pilot up and offered Henry and I a ride back to Cocoa Beach, which we gratefully accepted.

Henry has never met a stranger

Thankfully, they only replaced the starter and battery and now the Honda is on the move once again. Henry is back to looking out MY window during our occasionally trips around the coast. Don is soon headed home from the desert.

So until the next time Don takes a work trip and we toss the coin again, this mechanical disaster will join the list of things I have discovered I can handle but prefer otherwise.
